Why We Moved to Astoria

A website to answer the question that everyone has been asking us

In August, 2005, we moved to Astoria, Oregon from Seattle. Even before we made the actual move, everyone asked us, "Why Astoria?". Well, the answer to that question is kind of complicated, and we haven't been able to give a short answer, so this web site will let people discover some of the reasons we moved here.

We'll start with some history. In 2002, we started a tradition of taking a summer vacation in Cannon Beach, just south of Astoria on the northern Oregon coast. Of course, Astoria was a natural pit stop, since it's the biggest town in the area. Bob noticed the architecture on some walks he took to get some exercise after several hours in the car, and the setting just seemed idyllic to us all (OK, maybe Tevan wasn't super impressed). Bob started saying around the house, "Let's move to Astoria", and Nancy initially wouldn't hear of it. After 3 years of this ritual, Nancy started doing the research, and Bob plotted, but still the idea of moving out of our Wallingford bungalow seemed a remote possibility.

Tevan wasn't at all interested in moving out of Seattle, where his friends and world was. We had to talk about the move when he was away, and that made everything go a lot slower. But we decided that we would take a chance on Astoria, as we saw signs in the neighborhood that made us want to move, and even though housing prices were rising in Astoria, costs were still way below those of Seattle houses.

To find out more about our decision, read on...and enjoy!
