Trips, Kraken games, and catching up over the years
Jul 27, 2018
Bill 7:11 PM

Hi Bob, Judy and I are having dinner in Raymond. We probably won't arrive in Astoria until around 8:15 or 8:30 pm, so we'll probably keep going straight to Cannon Beach. Hopefully, we'll see you in Cannon Beach this weekend or in Astoria on Monday on the way back home. Say hi to Nancy. Bill

Bob

Ok. Maybe tomorrow in Cannon Beach. Nancy is working tonight and tomorrow, so can't come, but I can meet you down there. Let's text tomorrow morning to arrange it. I'm flexible on times.

Bill

Sounds good. I'll text you in the morning. It was great talking to you last night after all these years!

Bob

Ditto! Hopefully see you tomorrow.

Bill 11:38 AM

We just finished breakfast at Pig n Pancake. We're going walking around town and then the beach with our dog Bentley, so let me know if you you want to come by this afternoon. Maybe we could have a late lunch. And/or a beer!

Bob

Definitely a beer! The Pig is the place; it was probably packed. Yeah, I'll probably head down soon, and catch you at some point. I'll text when I get there and see where you are.

Bill

Sounds great. No rush.

Bill 2:11 PM

Hi Bob, it's about 2 pm. We're back at our hotel, the Ilwaco Inn. We're going to take a walk on the beach soon. We have plans to meet friends in Manzanita for dinner around 5 pm, so I'm free until about 4 pm. Hope to see you soon. Bill

Hi Bob, it was great to see you yesterday in Cannon Beach. Thanks for coming down to see us. Stay in touch, and hope to see you sometime soon in Seattle at the curling club, theater, hockey game, etc. Say hi to Nancy. Take care, Bill. PS, The Million Dollar Quartet will be playing at the Village Theatre in Issaquah May 9 to June 23, 2019.

Bob

Thanks Bill. It was great to see you, thanks for the beer and squid, and it was good to catch up a little. Congrats to your daughter on all her accomplishments. You should (and are, I think) be proud! Yes, I'll let you know when I'm next in Seattle and we'll get together if possible. I'll keep the show in mind for next year. Have a safe trip back! And good to see you too, Judy, and keep Bill in line! -Bob

Way overdue, but thanks for the birthday card! It's been whirlwind since we met. I went to Berkeley for a week, then Tevan was home until a few days ago, with a couple visitors in there also. Tevan is now in Boston with his girlfriend, and I'm getting ready to start teaching again. Doing lots of house projects, and trying to enjoy the beautiful weather, now that the smoke is gone. I did go to Seattle for a couple days in August, but had literally no time between going to a memorial dinner and carting Tevan and his friend around to see a couple really old friends before he left for Boston. Hopefully, I will be able to go to Seattle again before the holidays, and we can play some curling and get some good beer! Thanks again for the card, and for the great time in Cannon Beach!

No worries, Bob. Hopefully, we can get together sometime this fall in Seattle. Bill

Bob 1:40 PM

Hey Bill — I'm going to Seattle the week of July 15th for a dentist appointment. I should have some time on Thursday (July 18) to visit if you're around. If that day doesn't work, maybe a shorter meeting anywhere between Tuesday evening (16th) and Friday morning (19th). Let me know. Hope all is going well! -Bob

Hi Bob, I am in Lithuania teaching English to foreign students at LUU International University in the city of Klaipeda this summer – quite an adventure. Sorry I won't be able to meet with you this time. I will return home on August 6. While you are in Seattle, you should definitely try to see the Village Theatre's musical, Million Dollar Quartet, in Everett, if you can. It is amazing. We saw it in May in Issaquah. Hopefully, we can get together the next time you are in Seattle. Best wishes, Bill

Bob 10:29 PM

Cool! Have fun! See you next time!

Bill 9:47 AM

Happy Birthday, Bob! Hope you and your family are doing well. Have a great day! Best wishes, Bill, Judy, and Caitlin Courshon

Bob

Thanks!!! How's it going?

Bill

Great, Caitlin is getting married a week from Saturday! Busy times! Have a great day! PS, I had my right hip replaced surgically over a year ago. Difficult recovery and rehab, but I'm doing great now. Hope to start curling again this fall!

Bill 3:10 PM

Anything new with you and the family? How are Nancy and Tevan? R U excited about the Kraken?

Bob 6:14 PM

Congratulations to Caitlin! Glad you've recovered from the hip replacement, Bill. I'm working this summer first at the local college teaching a math class to high schoolers. Now I'm an aide in an "adventure camp" summer school at a local school district. Fun!! Nancy is still at the hospital, but thinking of quitting. Tough time for health care workers. Tevan is in Burlington, Vermont, and is about to start a job at a startup that works with high school kids on coding and self-learning. We're all ok but getting worried again about Covid. I don't know if I'll go to Kraken games, as I heard tickets will be >$100. But we'll see. Still hoping to get up there at some point to visit you.

Bill 7:41 PM

My future son-in-law and his family have season tickets to the Kraken, so I might get to go to a game once in a while! Hope to see you some time! We'll let you know if we ever make it back out to the Oregon Coast. Caitlin and her fiancée were in Manzanita a few weeks ago, but we haven't been there since we saw you in Cannon Beach. Say hi to Nancy. Stay safe, and again, Happy Birthday!

Bob 9:01 PM

Sounds good. Thanks!!

Bill 8:09 AM

Hey Bob, I went to my first Kraken game last night with daughter Caitlin – Kraken beat Ottawa Senators 4–2. What fun! We definitely have to go to a game together next year! Hope you and Nancy are doing well. Best, Bill

Bob 12:20 PM

Yeah, maybe a Ranger game! We're doing ok. We may be in your area for Folklife Memorial Day weekend. Maybe see you then! Cheers! Bob

Bill

Sounds good. We may be at Lake Chelan over Memorial Day weekend, but I can let you know later. Best, Bill

Bob 2:39 PM

Hey Bill — if you're around and the Kraken are playing, we should get tickets for the last week in March sometime. That's spring break, and I'm off. I'm probably going to take the Thursday and Friday of the previous week off too, so hopefully it will work out. Let me know. Maybe we can talk this weekend? Hope all is well! - Bob

Bill 4:19 PM

Hi Bob, I hope you're doing well. Judy and I are down in the Palm Springs, CA area for the month, and we'll be home around March 4. We went to a Coachella Valley Firebirds game (the Kraken's AHL farm team) last week, which was really fun. The Kraken have a home game against the Ducks on Thursday, March 30, at 7 pm which would work for me if you want to go. Let me know if you want me to get tickets for that game. We'll still be here this weekend if you want to talk then. Best, Bill 425‑681‑8204

Bob

Yes, please get tickets for that game! I'll try to call this weekend. We just got back from Hawaii and it snowed here last night! Enjoy sunny California!! Should I just get tickets for the 2 of us? That would work for me.

Bill

Yes, thanks! FYI, my son in law doesn't have any tickets for that game, so I'll have to buy them on resale from Ticketmaster or StubHub. Hopefully, we won't have to pay too much for them, but the Kraken are a hotter ticket this year than last year.

Bob

No worries, I'll pay whatever the ticket price is for me.

Feb 24, 2023
Bill 4:17 PM

Hi Bob, I sent you your ticket to the Kraken game on 3/30. You need to accept the email transfer first to be able to use it. The cost is $150 per ticket (including service charges). This was the best deal I could get. You can pay me back at the game. Best, Bill

Bob

Thanks Bill. Yeah, hockey tickets are expensive these days. And the Kraken are doing reasonably well this year. I'll set up a Ticketmaster account this weekend and accept the ticket transfer. See you soon! Disregard that last message! Successfully deleted.

Feb 26, 2023
Bob 6:26 PM

Ok, the ticket has been transferred. I had to start an account. I hope I don't get too much junk mail and texts. Anyway, see you at the arena, or maybe we can go out to dinner beforehand, or meet somewhere that week. I'm still not sure when I'm going up to Seattle, but I probably won't have a car. I can get around pretty easily by public transport, and definitely get to the arena and anywhere in the north part of Seattle easily. I'll text you when I'm more certain of my itinerary. Thanks for getting the tickets, and I'll pay you back when I see you in Seattle.

Bill

Thanks. They have really good food at the Arena (not cheap, but good, with a good variety including vegetarian, Asian, etc.), so we could meet at the Arena early before the game and eat there. They also serve all kinds of alcohol too! I'm flexible, so we could meet somewhere else in Lower Queen Anne if you prefer, but I'm not too familiar with the area. You can let me know when and where you want to meet later.

Bob

Sounds good. I'll let you know as the time approaches.

Mar 28, 2023
Bob 12:23 PM

Hey Bill — looking forward to seeing you and the Kraken. They're still in it, so the game should be good. I'll be getting there by bus, so we could meet anywhere that's convenient for you. There are lots of restaurants in Lower Queen Anne (now called Uptown!), so if you have an eating preference, let me know and I can find one, or we can eat at the arena. I'm thinking we can meet late afternoon and relax and yap for a while if you have the time. Let me know. I get to Seattle tomorrow on the train late morning. Hope all is going well with you and the family. See you soon! - Bob

Bill

Hi Bob, is this your first Kraken game at Climate Pledge Arena, or have you been there before? I went to 2 games last year, and it was really fun. Yes, I can meet you around 4 pm (or later) on Thursday someplace in Lower Queen Anne near Seattle Center (or in Seattle Center, like the Seattle Center House). Just pick a time and a place, and I'll meet you there. I'll have my car, so I can drop you off where you are staying after the game, if it's not too far out of my way. If you have a specific place you want to go for dinner near the Arena, that's fine with me, but the food is really good at the Arena too, although not cheap – they have Asian (Din Tai Fung), vegetarian (Impossible Burgers), etc. Another reason for getting to the Arena early is I believe it's Jordan Eberle Bobblehead Night, so if we get there early enough, you might pick up a cool bobblehead. I think the Arena opens around 5:30 pm. Let me know what you want to do. Thanks, Bill

Bob

This is my first Kraken game. Last time I was at that arena, it was Key Arena! I'm good with dinner at the arena, but I'll still look for restaurants near there. My favorite — Tup Tim Thai — has gone out of business. But there are some good ones nearby, I just have to look up their status and if dinner is worth it. Yes, it would be great to get dropped off after the game, maybe just close enough for me to take a bus or walk. It's in Wallingford, near 45th and Wallingford. Yeah, we can meet at the Center House (now called The Armory) at 4. Sounds great!! Or we could coordinate by text if that isn't convenient for you. I know the Seattle Center grounds and surrounds quite well. Thanks again for getting the tickets. I'll have a check for you.

Mar 28, 2023 (later)
Bill 11:07 PM

It all sounds good. I can meet you at the Armory at 4, and we can figure it out from there. I can definitely drop you off in Wallingford. It's not too far out of my way at all. It's fairly close to where my daughter Caitlin lives.

Mar 30, 2023
Bob 11:00 AM

Cool! See you at 4!

Bill 4:03 PM

Hi Bob, just parked, walking over to Armory.

Bob

Ok, I'm here.

Bob 11:51 AM

Throwing Stones with Granite Curling Club (thestranger.com). Have you played with them?

Apr 11, 2024
Bill 2:52 PM

Hi Bob, sorry, we'd been driving back home from Palm Desert, CA, since last Saturday and got home last night, so I couldn't respond sooner. We visited the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park along the way. Been there? Hope you are doing well. Anyway, I have curled with a number of the folks in the article. I curled on Bryan Pittard's team for a while a year or two ago. Interesting guy. Haven't curled much lately, hope to sub for a few games this spring if possible. Best, Bill

Bill 9:05 AM

Hi Bob, hope you had a very Happy Birthday yesterday! Have you done any traveling this summer? Let me know if you want to go to a Kraken game this season. Best wishes, Bill

Bob 1:22 PM

No traveling this summer. I'm slated to go to Portugal in September. Nancy retires in October. Definitely go to a game this season. Hope you're doing well. — Bob

Bill

Have fun in Portugal, and let me know when you can go to a game. We'll have to go back to the Queen Anne Beer Hall!

Bob

Definitely! I actually found a beer hall in Portland that reminded me of the Queen Anne one! It's now a brewery with a lab (dog) theme!

Tue, Aug 12
Bill 7:56 AM

Hey Bob, hope you had a Happy Birthday yesterday! Didn't make it to any Kraken games last season. Maybe we can go to a game this season. Best wishes, Bill. We did go to a Firebirds game down in Palm Desert. Those games are a lot of fun!

Wed, Aug 13
Bob 6:24 PM

Cool! Yeah, we should try to go to a Ranger/Kraken game. When will you be in the Seattle area this season?

Thu, Sep 4
Bill 10:44 AM

Hey, Bob, hope you had a good summer. We will be in the Seattle area now through October 1, October 17–31, December 12–29, and back in late April 2026. That doesn't leave a lot of time for Kraken games, but check to see if there is a game we can both go to. In the alternative, if you're in Palm Springs, CA area this winter, the Coachella Valley Firebirds (Kraken AHL farm club) games are great, cheaper than Kraken games, and close to our home in Palm Desert. Best, Bill

Bob

I'll check. Not planning any winter trips except Hawaii so far. We're also going to New England to see the kid in early October.

Bill

Our daughter Caitlin and her husband Connor just moved to Hanover, NH, for the next two years, while Connor is pursuing an MBA degree at Dartmouth College. Caitlin got a great new job as a psychologist at the Dartmouth Hospital. My sister Bonnie still lives in Dorset, VT, near Manchester, VT, and about a 1‑1/2 hour drive from Hanover. We're planning to visit all of them in late March 2026. We have a trip to Japan coming up October 2–17, which we are excited about – never been there.

Bob 12:43 PM

Cool! I've been to Japan. Great place! Expensive, but amazing food, sites and people. Tevan lives in Claremont, NH, just down the road from Dartmouth. I love New England; I'd live there over any other place in the US except right here. Enjoy!

Bill 9:54 PM

I agree!

Sat, Dec 13
Bob 2:33 PM

Got your card. Amazingly, our son Tevan now lives in Claremont, NH, just down the road from Dartmouth! Perhaps we can arrange a joint visit at some point...

Sun, Dec 14
Bill 8:16 AM

Hey Bob, we are in town for the holidays, and I could attend a Kraken game on 12/16 (vs Avalanche @ 7 pm) or 12/28 (vs Flyers @ 7 pm), if you are interested in coming to Seattle for a game. We will be in CA the rest of the season. Let me know. Best regards, Bill. PS, Caitlin and her husband are both playing on a "tripod" (beginner) hockey team at Dartmouth. They love it! Caitlin scored her first goal a couple weeks ago. Hope the floods have not been a problem for you in Astoria.

Bob 5:29 PM

Maybe the 28th, if it isn't sold out. I'm getting in touch with our friend Monica about staying at her place. I'll let you know for sure hopefully by tomorrow. That would be cool! Good on the kids playing hockey! I wish there was a rink around here! Some damage in Astoria, but more south and especially in northwest Washington. Hope you guys are ok.

Bill 8:39 PM

Ok, Monica says yes, so if they aren't sold out, please get tickets for 12/28. Thanks!

Mon, Dec 15
Bob 12:15 AM

I'll start working on it Monday!

Bill 6:47 PM

Hi Bob, I bought the tickets, and I just emailed you the ticket information. If you have any questions, please let me know. Best, Bill

Bob

Thanks! Got it. Nancy has Venmo. I don't. I can bring a check to Seattle if that's ok. I will be using public transport while there, so no worries. Sounds great! Thanks!! See you at 3 at the Kraken shop. Are you okay with my keeping both tickets on my phone? If you want me to transfer your ticket to your phone, just let me know, but you need to make sure your phone battery is charged up!

Bill 9:16 PM

I guess I have to have it on my phone when we go in, but we can do the transfer when I see you in Seattle. My phone will be charged. I'll carry a charger...

Mon, Dec 15 (later)
Bill

Here is 1 ticket to Seattle Kraken vs. Philadelphia Flyers – My Account | Accept Transfer (ticketmaster.com). I just transferred the ticket to you already. Just click on the link above to accept the transfer now, and we're done. Thanks.

Bob

Accepted. Thanks!!

Bill

Great, we're all set.

Tue, Dec 16
Bob 1:04 PM

I just booked bus and train for the trip. I'm going to go to Portland first and hang out during Saturday, then take a train to Seattle that night and stay at my friend's house. I've got a train back on Monday, and my wife will pick me up in Kelso. See you soon!!

Wed, Dec 17
Bill 10:57 AM

Sounds like a good plan for a fun weekend! See you Sunday the 28th. Hi Hon, when you're at the mall, I would love to have for Hanukkah/Christmas one or two new UnTuckit shirts, if you see any nice new designs at the Bellevue Square store. Thanks! Love Bill

Bob

You sent this to me, Bill. Happy Chanukah!

Bill

Sorry Bob, it was intended for Judy. Please disregard! Thanks for letting me know!

Sat, Dec 27
Bill 6:03 PM

Hope you're having a good time in Portland. See you Sunday at 3 pm at the Kraken store in Seattle Center (where we met last time). Safe travels!

Bob

I'm on my way to Seattle on the train. Portland was OK. If you want to meet earlier and have lunch, we could do that, or just go over to the arena and have food there. Doors supposedly open at 3:30.

Bill 7:30 PM

Hi Bob, Judy is dropping me off at Seattle Center. She has other plans earlier in the day, so the earliest she can get me to Seattle Center is about 3 pm. I injured my foot recently, so I can't do a huge amount of walking. We can still go over to the Queen Anne Beerhall around 3, or just go straight to Climate Pledge if you prefer. Either one is fine with me. Either way, we can still meet at the old Center House, if that's the easiest place to meet. Just let me know when and where you want to meet. (After the game, I'll probably just take an Uber home.) Thanks, Bill

Bob

Ok. Keep the plan. See you at the Kraken store at the Armory/Center House at 3. We can decide from there.

Bill

Sounds good, see you then!

Sun, Dec 28
Bill 2:58 PM

Hi Bob, I'm here at the Kraken Store in the Armory. Bill

Bob

I'll be there in a few seconds. I'm standing at the entrance to the store.
